In a new article our colleague Dr. Ian Kearns, co-founder and Director of the European Leadership Network, which works to advance the idea of a cooperative and cohesive Europe, presented an important analysis on the current crisis in the Ukraine. As the debate on how to respond to the Russian annexation of Crimea rages, Dr. Kearns argues that the West needs to get beyond sanctions to a more nuanced policy aimed at bringing Putin to the negotiating table.

 

"A strategic response to the current crisis means thinking beyond sanctions," said Dr. Kearns. "It means using a more nuanced mix of instruments to deny Putin opportunities in Europe while pursuing a dialogue with him about cooperation in the interests of all."

In a new article published in the Guardian, Ms. Rebecca Peters, Defend International supporter and friend, provided an analysis on the lessons learned in Australia about gun control.

"Stricter gun control laws save lives," said Ms. Peters. "After our own mass murder, Australia didn't ban guns, but we passed stronger regulations. Gun deaths dropped dramatically."
