On 10 December 2009 Defend International members in Iraq marked the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through different activities, including an exhibition displaying photographs covering a gamut of categories.

DI member Mr. Haider Oraibi delivered a speech on behalf of Defend International. He encouraged everyone to get more involved in human rights promotion, protection, monitoring, documentation and raising public awareness.

In addition, he acknowledged the importance of the interaction with the main human rights bodies.

  • Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the first international instrument that proclaims, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights."
  • The UN identified December 10 to mark the Universal Declaration of Human Rights worldwide every year.
  • Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all states to publish the text of the Declaration and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."
